Daiduji Temple Ganzanken Rantei Garden

Located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, the Odoriji Hozanken Rantei Garden is a nationally designated place of scenic beauty and is part of the Odoriji Temple, a branch temple of the Nagahama School of Shinshu Otani sect. It is known locally as "Nagahama Gobo" or "Nagahama Gobo-san". The garden is considered to have been created in the early Edo period (1603-1868), with an island in the middle of a dry pond, a built-up hill and a dry waterfall stone arrangement in the near view, and Mt. The Rantei garden, named after Maruyama Okyo's "Rantei Kyokusui no Zu," features a stone bridge over a dry pond and a kare-taki stone arrangement with standing stones in the center. It is said that this garden was originally developed as the front garden of Kozanken, a shoin built to house the abbot of Daiduji Temple, and was landscaped by the fifth abbot during the Horeki era (1600-1868). The garden was designed with Mt. Ibuki, the sacred mountain, in mind, and its name is derived from the mountain. While the garden has the beauty of a traditional dry landscape garden, it is also characterized by its pond garden-like ground layout despite being a dry landscape garden, as water sometimes pools in the garden after rainfall. This is Shigemori's point of view of the beauty and unique form of Japanese gardens. The Odongji Hozanken Rantei Garden is a precious cultural heritage that symbolizes the history and beauty of Japanese gardens, and its preservation and succession form an important aspect of Japanese culture.
