Maruyama Ancient Tomb (Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture)
Maruyama Kofun, the oldest burial mound in Japan, is an independent hill located at the southernmost tip of Toragozen. This burial mound was built about 1,600 years ago and is located at the top of what is commonly known as "Maruyama. The mound is circular in shape and is thought to contain a clay burial chamber. It is also estimated that the mound was surrounded by clay and vermilion. A bronze arabesque green narrow-bearded beast band mirror was excavated from the burial mound, along with numerous pottery shards. This mirror was the first one excavated in Japan, and it is assumed to have been made in the Han Dynasty in B.C. and later brought to Japan. This bronze mirror is said to be as valuable as a national important cultural property.
